Flat roofs – aka Membrane roofs or Low-sloped roofs — are generally ones where the pitch is less than 2/12. Because these roofs can’t shed water with the same velocity as a higher pitched roof, they require specialized roofing material. The roofing contractors at Topper Construction are certified installers of Firestone TPO and EPDM products. Each of these single ply roof membranes performs the same essential function, but they do have a few differences. We can help determine which is right for you.
What is EPDM Roofing?
EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer. These ingredients mix to form a synthetic rubber material that is used as a membrane over low-sloped roofs. This highly engineered product is well equipped to handle weathering as a result of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, and harsh elements like rain and snow. It’s available in white or black, and is widely regarded as a durable option. EPDM roofing is affordable and easy to install.
What is TPO Roofing?
TPO stands for thermosplastic polyolefin. This type of flat roof membrane does much the same thing as EPDM roofing, but is made of a different material. TPO is relatively new to the world of flat roofing, but is becoming a popular choice. It’s advertised as one of the most environmentally friendly options, due to its lack of harmful plasticizers.
Flat roof systems
Many applications that require membrane roofing are a lot more complicated than simply adhering EPDM or TPO to the roof deck. Other considerations that can come in to play can involve insulation requirements, channeled drainage, curbing/flashing of roof top HVAC units, equipment & maintenance access, parapet scuppers/coping, and a host of others. At Topper Construction, we have extensive experience installing complete flat roofing systems.
