3 Skylight Installation and Maintenance Tips for the Fall

Are you thinking about having skylights installed this fall? If you are, you should remember that skylight installation and maintenance can be tricky in the slick, foggy conditions that fall brings. Skylights will also invite in more sunlight during the day, which means that you can decrease your energy bills. So if you’re eager to get started, here are some tips for ensuring that your skylights last through the fall and winter.

Cleaning Them

During the installation process, your new skylights could get smudged or dirty. Despite differences in size and design, skylights are still similar to other window-type openings, especially when it comes to how often they need to be cleaned. Avoid cleaning your skylights during the warmest time of the day. However, since we are halfway through November, that shouldn’t be as much of a concern as it would be in say, August, for example. Start by coating the glass of the skylights with some soap and water. By doing this, you can start removing encrusted layers of filth from your skylights. Next, follow it by using a glass cleaning solution that won’t leave marks or scratches. Always remember to remove the cleaning solution as soon as possible once you’re done cleaning.

Looking for Leaks

You might not realize it, but during the skylight installation process, your lights might spring a leak. Leaks can damage the skylights, and the roofs and ceilings they are connected to; so how do you find them? Take a look at the drywall around where the skylights are installed. If you see any odd stains or bulges, these are telltale signs of a leaking skylight. Something might be wrong with your roof flashing – so, if that’s the case, you should rely on the professionals at Topper Construction to come and fix it for you.

Examining the Glass

When it comes to skylight installation, a major obstacle comes in the form of where you should place your skylight. Avoid putting it too close to the trees in your yard, because when tree limbs are torn off during a seasonal storm, they could go flying into your roof and damage your skylights. Do you see signs of cracking in the skylight glass? If so, it’s another job for the experts to complete.
