How to Protect Wood Siding

wood siding

All types of weather can affect wood siding, but prolonged exposure to moisture is a real problem.

Whether you just moved into a home outfitted with beautiful rich wood siding or just had perfect new wood siding installed, proper maintenance and protection will go a long way towards making it last a long time. To avoid costly repairs and replacement down the road, use these tips and tricks to keep your wood siding looking great and protecting your home for years to come.

Protect with a Proper Finish

Finishing is very important when it comes to protecting wood siding. It should always be properly finished with a stain, clear coat sealer, or paint. If you do not finish your wood siding, it will be open to rotting and decay caused by moisture and insect infestation caused by, well, wood. Think of the wood in and around your home and how it expands and contracts as humidity changes over the course of the year. The same thing happens to your wood siding. If you do not do a good job of keeping your siding finished and sealed, rot can get into small portions during an expansion and set in quickly.

Protect with a Good Clean

Cleaning the stains and debris from your siding properly is also important for keeping it in good condition. Use warm water with a wood siding-friendly soap and a soft brush to clean off any dirt, dust, or debris. Don’t tackle it all at once if you have a big home—divide the exterior into 20-foot sections and work from top to bottom, rinse, and then start in on the next one.

Protect with a Replacement

If your wood siding is in bad shape or showing many signs of damage, it might be time to replace it altogether. Damage to your wood siding can come from the lawnmower, a ball or toy striking the side of your home, or even drastic changes in moisture or weather. Topper Construction can replace panels of your wood siding, or even the whole thing if needed.
