Make the Best of Summer Roofing Work

If you’ve been putting off summer roofing work, there’s no more time to delay.

Even as the summer begins to wind down, there’s still time to get some work done your roof. During the summer, it’s far safer to perform some maintenance or install some updates on your roof. You’ve got the advantages of stronger sunlight, dry weather, longer days, and no risk of ice coating your roof. So if you’ve been putting off summer roofing work, there’s no more time to delay.

Examine the Roof for Damages

First of all, you will want to start by checking the roof for any existing damages. To do this, you’ll need a safe and sturdy ladder to use. Climb the ladder in the early morning hours and check for these signs of damage:

  • Shingles pulling away from the roof
  • Missing shingles, or shingles that have superficial damages
  • Presence of moss and algae
  • Random debris on the roof

You should also ensure that your roof flashing is in good condition. Recall that roof flashing is installed around the chimney, the skylights, and any other features you may have on your roof. Most of the time, the average homeowner doesn’t grasp how punishing winter weather can be on roof flashing. Given enough time and neglect, the roof flashing can wear out. When roof flashing crumbles, it can’t protect your roof as it once did.

Look Under the Eaves of the Roof

Next, look under the eaves of the roof. Even if your roof and your roof flashing appear to be in fine condition, there might be other problems you can’t spot right away. Dirt and leaves can gather inside the eaves, which can block the eaves as easily as they could clog your gutters. Be careful you aren’t stung by any insects – wasps and carpenter bees tend to build nests under your roof eaves. If you find wasps or carpenter bees, have a professional come to get rid of them. Attempting to remove them yourself could put you in harm’s way.

What Are Your Gutters Like?

Lastly, check on the state of your gutters. When it comes to completing any summer roofing work, make sure your gutters are clean. Clean gutters are just as important as clean roofs.  Check that there are no buildups of debris in your gutters. If the gutters have become dislodged, have them repaired and replaced. Loose or blocked gutters can present several problems that can be expensive and time-consuming to fix. Standing water, the growth of algae, and weakened supports are all potential issues an expert can resolve.
