How to Know Your Roof Has Suffered Water Damage

Start 2018 by making sure your roof is in the best possible condition. Here are five ways to identify water damage to your roof.

Whether your residential or commercial roof needs to be repaired, the first question to answer is “what type of roof damage do I have?” Start 2018 by making sure your roof is in the best possible condition. Here are five ways to identify water damage to your roof.

What Happened to the Shingles?

The first question you should ask is what happened to your shingles. High winds and wind chill aren’t your only concerns when you walk around outside without enough layers on – you should also make sure these winds haven’t ripped the shingles, or layers, off of your roof as well. Even a single missing shingle can allow water damage on your roof. Find and replace any shingles that have worn out or have been displaced. Likewise, if your asphalt shingles are showing signs of damage, it may be time to update them as well.

Are Your Gutters Clogged?

Don’t forget to check your gutters. Both residential and commercial buildings will have gutters, and both types of gutters can be blocked by wet leaves or particles from the roof. While some loss of roof particles, also called granules is perfectly normal, excessive loss of these granules can also lead to further water damage.

Do You Have a Flashlight?

Chances are, your commercial building doesn’t have an attic. However, if your home has an attic, it might be in danger. If you see weak winter sunlight coming into your attic, then water can come in as well.  Replace your insulation as soon as you can.

Is the Flashing Intact?

The flashing on your roof is another crucial ally in the fight against water damage. If your flashing is installed around the chimney, then there might be a leak. Don’t worry though, these types of holes happen often and are normal. Even so, you should have the flashing repaired or replaced. Flat roofs can be equipped with flashing as well, so be sure to have those systems inspected and repaired whenever necessary too.

How Old is Your Roof?

One last question to consider is the overall age of your roof. While roofs are designed to last for years, even they will reach the end of their expected lifespans. Don’t let harsh winter conditions wreak havoc on your aging roof – get it replaced instead!
