Fixing Your Home’s Skylights

One of the changes you might be considering this spring is to install or repair some skylights.

One of the changes you might be considering this spring is to install some skylights. Take advantage of this time to get new skylights put in before summer begins. However, there could be some unexpected problems that pop up that you’ll have to deal with, so here is some advice for resolving issues and fixing your home’s skylights.

Frequent Problems

Most of the time, you won’t notice anything is wrong with your home’s skylights. At least, that is until you start to spot leaks. Leaks are one of the most frequent problems you’ll have to deal with when it comes to fixing your skylight. Something might be wrong with the flashing on your roof.

Unfortunately, you can’t know this for sure unless you call in professionals to inspect your roof. If you are worried about keeping the glass skylight intact, then it might be high time to replace it. That said, you don’t need to get another one made of glass. Plastic might be a better option, especially if you are worried about your new skylight being damaged by flying stones, errant baseballs, or even showers of hail.

Repairing Mobile Skylights

When your skylights can move around, that presents a different set of maintenance questions than for static models. If you need to let some fresh air, you can open up your skylight. This opening won’t be all that large – a few inches at most, but it is enough to get the air going. The gears and poles that operate and support this model of the skylight can jam and will need to be greased or lubricated to get them working again.

Sometimes, these skylights will be motor-operated. However, the problem might be hidden inside the electrical system and will be beyond your ability to address. Whatever the problem could be, don’t forget to keep your skylight system as clean as possible.

Cleaning Them Off

Occasionally, problems with your skylights because they are too dirty. Whether it is due to dust, pollen, or other natural debris, your home’s skylight won’t be as appealing or as useful as it once was if you don’t clean them every so often. However, you can get your skylights cleaned off and the same time you have the experts come to clean out your gutters. You won’t have to do it all on your own, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with us right away!
