2 Things Every Homeowner Should Know About Roof Replacement

Roof replacement doesn’t only need to happen because your roof is leaking.

Roof replacement doesn’t only need to happen because your roof is leaking. However, it is looking more and more likely that the old saying, “April showers bring May flowers” should be revised to “May showers bring June flowers.” Powerful storms can wear out your roof, but it can also break down over time without the necessary inspections and maintenance to keep it in the best shape possible.

Symptoms of a Leaking Roof

How can you tell that you roof is at risk of developing a leak? This question should always be on your mind any time you head outside to do yard work or examine your roofing and siding for any signs of damage after the latest storm. These symptoms include:

  • Damaged shingles: When your shingles are damaged, it threatens the integrity of the roof. Likewise, if your shingles are out of place, then they can’t help protect your home, either. You should replace any damaged shingles you can find before they are lost the next time high winds blow through your neighborhood.
  • Rusted flashing: Roof flashing is another critical part of preventing a leak in your roof. You will find flashing installed in the sections of your home’s roof near the chimney, the skylights, and the vents. If you can’t spot them, then try looking at the intersections between different areas of your roof.
  • Damaged gutters and downspouts: Don’t forget to check on the condition of your gutters and downspouts for signs of clogs, cracks, or other water damage.
  • Interior conditions: You might only notice a leaky roof after the first few drops have gone through your ceiling and have started to drip onto the furnishings in your home. Even if you aren’t startled by such a situation, you might start to notice that the paint and wallpaper are slowly discoloring.

Layering in a New Roof

Every homeowner should know that it is possible to put in a new roof without having to remove the existing one first. Doing this can save you some money during the roof replacement process. However, you should know that it isn’t as durable. Layering your roof might also contribute to your roof not being as stable as you would like it. Perhaps a better idea is to remove the old roof and put in an entirely new one.

Removing the roof isn’t a project that even the most dedicated and ambitious do-it-yourself devotee can attempt by themselves. You will need advice and labor from expert roofing contractors, such as those at Topper Construction, to make sure that it gets done safely, efficiently, and correctly.
