Once the temperature begins to fall into the low 40-degree range on a consistent basis, your asphalt shingles begin not to behave as they should. Most shingles use a self-adhesive strip that requires warm, direct sunlight for them to adhere together and in colder weather, that sealing process can take longer.
This does not mean that you need to worry about a winter repair if one must happen, but it is precisely why you do not want to schedule any roof repairs for December if you do not have to.
The Advantages of Late Summer
By late August, you should be past the worst of the heat, which will make for more productive working conditions compared to the middle of summer. In addition, by doing things in the late summer, you will have time to get around fall schedule rushes and allow for any potential material lead time.
You can also benefit from the advantages that come with information. You know that your roof was subjected to the heat and humidity and perhaps some storms during the entire summer season. Late summer may prove to be a good time to have someone check out the results of the summer on your roof.
What to Check Before You Call
There are a couple of things to check out before scheduling anything:
Gutters that are clogged or not draining properly. Gutters’ job is to drain rainwater from the roof, taking it to a safe place. Over the course of one season, gutters might get clogged with all sorts of plant waste, sand, and leaves. It’s important to pay attention to any overflow in case of moderate rains.
Unusual presence of granules in your gutters or downspouts. Some amount of granules in downspouts and gutters is absolutely normal, but a noticeable increase in their amount is a sign of shingles deteriorating faster than usual.
An area on the roof that looks different compared to the rest of it. Curling, discoloration, or a section that looks different from the rest of the roof. You don’t need to diagnose it yourself. You just need to flag it.
